In This Month's Issue:
The growth in consumer spending on Internet movie rentals and downloads sounds impressive, up 79% in 2008 over 2007, but that growth is against a very small base. CinemaNow, the first Internet movie rental site, launched ten years ago but the business equals just 1 of studio revenue from the combined sales and rentals of movies on discs. Still, studios are looking to digital markets to provide growth going forward. Also in this issue: If the Supreme Court allows it, the “network DVR” could facilitate the legal delivery of paid digital content to “any device, anytime, anywhere”, and an analysis of 2008 video performance shows U.S. audiences look for lighthearted entertainment in difficult times.
